PAW Notes

APRIL 23 , 2008

Happy April, ’01! With this issue comes the arrival of spring and the surging forth of our 2008 AG campaign. AG chairs Connor Browne and Rob Holmes want to remind you to support Princeton and the Class of 2001 in our AG efforts. Donations can be made via http://giving.princeton.edu/ag/makeagift/. Thanks in advance for your help!

Connor and his wife, Christina Price (Boston College ’01), welcomed their first child, Ella Regan Browne, Jan. 30. Ella was 7 pounds 2 ounces at birth. Mother and baby are doing great. Christina and Connor are in Philadelphia while Christina finishes her residency in emergency medicine at Drexel. In August they will move back to Santa Fe, N.M., where Connor will continue working at Thornburg Investment Management as a portfolio manager and managing director and where Christina has accepted an assistant professor and attending-physician position at the U. of New Mexico.

Julie (Jarrett) Reid and her husband, Alex, welcomed Lillian Everett Reid Nov. 2, 2007. The little cutie weighed a healthy 7 pounds 1 ounce and measured 19 1/2 inches long. Lily’s folks are still living in Manhattan and enjoying life as new parents.

Alicia Clarke    Alicia Clarke and kids

Happy Thanksgiving! May your holiday be full of the warmth of family and friends . . . and of course, good food!

Thanks to ALICIA CLARKE, who updated us on her latest travels and ’01 sightings. She wrote: “In February Sarah (Curtin) Tims, Lori Volker, and I visited Laura (Vilaro) Ramis in beautiful, sunny Puerto Rico. Laura and her husband, Guille, are doing a great job raising their three adorable children. Pictured are Sarah and Ignacio, Lori, Laura, Guillermo, and me with the very talkative Elena (we got along great)! I also took a trip in March with Sarah (Keffer) Donoho to visit Julia Hanks in Nashville. Sarah is an attorney in Chicago and Julia is in her second year of law school at Vanderbilt. So I should be pretty set with free legal advice! We also had a chance to meet up with Scott Denbo and his wife, Erin. Pictured here are Sarah, Julia, and me.”

From Russell Baker '71: “Belatedly, I report that my daughter, ELIZABETH BAKER ’01, married MATTHER POSSLER ’01 July 29, 2006, in Kansas City, Mo. Both Liz and Matt were officers at Ivy Club during their undergraduate years.

“Many Princetonians were present at the wedding, including the Class of ’71 Quartet (all Footnotes from the Class of 1971, namely Ernest Pittman, Robert (“Robby”) Haines, David Chamberlain, and me). Liz had requested that the quartet sing at her reception, and my quartet classmates were fantastic to travel from Baltimore (Ernest), Portland, Maine (Robby), and Boston (Dave) in order to make that happen. It was a great wedding weekend, and having my ’71 classmates there made it particularly memorable.”

Andre Geffen    Jasper Vanderkam Conway

More bouncing ’01 Tiger cubs to report! Congratulations ’01 parents and families!

Nicole Forrest writes: “I had a baby! My husband, Kevin Forrest *05 and I welcomed Katharine Autumn into the world on Christmas Eve 2006.”

Jasper Vanderkam Conway (shown) was born May 16 to Laura Vanderkam and her husband, Michael. Laura reports: “This photo is from his first post-womb plane trip, at 5 weeks old, to my brother-in-law’s wedding in Puerto Rico. Jasper did require a lot of “special handling” but he did pretty well. That may be because I spent a lot of time while pregnant traveling to promote my new book, Grindhopping: Build a Rewarding Career Without Paying Your Dues, which was published by McGraw-Hill during the winter. Between the book and the baby it’s been a busy past few months — but pretty fun, too.”

Stephen Pierce    Blue Voyage Cruise

Jonathan LimBabies, babies, babies. . . Lots of little ones to celebrate! Congratulations to all the newly smitten ’01 parents. JUDY LIM and husband, Alex ’00, have been delighting in their son, Jonathan, since his birth Oct. 14, 2006. The family has been in SF for four years and loves it there, aside from being far from their beloved Yankees. Judy reports that when little “J” is not wearing orange (thanks to his ’03 and ’07 aunts), he’s decked out in anything Yankees!

Sofia Holmes VazquezXabi and Henley Holmes Vazquez welcomed their daughter, Sofia Holmes, Nov. 5, 2006. Apparently, Sofia’s been easy on her parents, making their transition to parenthood very smooth. The family is traveling this summer following Xabi’s HBS graduation and will be relocating to NYC, where he will join Merrill Lynch’s strategic investment group. Henley’s been working as a freelance writer and plans to find something new once in the city.

Maxim Shusteff writes: “Our baby boy, Jacob Shusteff, was born April 7, 2007. He and his mom, Tamar, came home the next day and everyone is doing splendidly. Though he doesn’t have any Princeton gear yet, he’ll certainly be wearing more than his share of orange soon.”

While some are settling down, others are out exploring the world. Earlier this year, six friends met in Turkey for a Blue Voyage cruise. Kate Lavin ’02, Scott Philips, Deeb Salem, Lauren Cabral Salem, Gary So ’00, and Ben Dookchitra ’00 traveled around the Aegean Sea and toured Istanbul and ancient Ephesus. Kate, Lauren, Gary, and Ben have just finished business school, while Scott and Deeb are working in NYC.

Stephen Pierce recently sent an update: “I deployed to Iraq Sept. 14, 2006. It was an awesome experience. I flew a war-ready F-16 from Andrews Air Force Base in DC to Moron, Spain (eight hours in a single-seat fighter . . . very uncomfortable). We took off from Spain and landed in Balad Air Base, Iraq. What a different world. I flew 17 close-air-support combat missions over a two-month span, supporting our Army brethren on the ground. I returned home Nov. 1, 2006, and was glad to be back. Since November, I have been flying missions in the DC area.”

DONOVAN CAMPBELL, a reserve captain in the Marines, was featured March 18 in a 60 Minutes interview by Scott Pelley. He offered insight into Marine clearing tactics in reference to the controversial Haditha, Iraq, conflict. Thanks to TIM RAGONES who wrote in after seeing the show.

Mike RothMIKE ROTH ran into Megan Bouchier ’02 (fellow Ivy member) in Stockholm in February. Both were walking across a frozen river when Mike spotted her conspicuous orange and black hat. He and his cousin were on their way to do some ice fishing and Megan was exploring the city while on holiday from her internship at the Hague’s war crimes tribunal. Talk about a small world!

ANDREW NORELLI writes: “ARRON MELVIN’s finally leaving Princeton finishing his PhD) and moving to Oxford, England, to work as an aerodynamicist for a Formula 1 racing team. It’s a pretty awesome job.” Congratulations to Arron and fellow ’01ers who are representing Princeton around the world in amazing ways!

I am also happy to brag about friend and famed runner Kristi (Rosso) Spence, who completed the October Chicago Marathon in 2:45:38 (6:19/mile pace)! Fast and furious, she secured an Olympic trial qualifying time by over two minutes! Way to go!
